I visited Ujung Kulon two times in 2006. I’ve posted about ujung kulon in my first personnel website in Multiply.com which already RIP since December 2013.
The first visit was on February 2006 with some coleagues from indobackpacer mailing list, and the second was with KKS Melati to build a small library in Taman Jaya. This photo I’ve taken from both of them.
Ujung Kulon National Park is located in the western of Java Island, it famous for the Java Rhino (a species which already endangered category by WWF: only left around 50 species in Ujung Kulon National Park). It also famous for Krakatau Mountain which errupted in August 1883, the eruption was resulting tsunami until 40 meter high, and make the world without sun rise for two days. You can read about Krakatau in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krakatoa
Back to the topic, The Ujung Kulon National Park now already green, the trees are very big. The beaches are very beautiful. Since it was the National Park, we should have the permit to go here.
How to get there :
- From Jakarta take the car following this path : Merak Toll Road – Cilegon – Anyer Beach – Carita Beach – Labuan Beach – Tanjung Lesung Beach – Pulau Umang (Desa Sumur). It takes around 7-8 hours
- From Sumur village/desa sumur, there are two options : by boat or by ojek (motor cycle taxi). Ask them to go to Taman Jaya village, it’s the westernmost village in Java Island.
- There are some interesting places in Ujung Kulon National Parks, the easiest way is by rent a boat : Handeuleum Island, Peucang Island and Panaitan Island.
